How to track social media link clicks
Platforms hide outbound truth. Give every network its own slug, inherit campaign UTMs, and read clicks next to bio button taps.

Key takeaways
- Never reuse one slug across Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and email.
- In-app browsers and privacy tools undercount. Use direction of travel.
- Bio button taps and caption clicks are different jobs. Measure both.
Why the native insight panel is not enough
Social apps report what they can see inside the app. A tap that opens an in-app browser, a preview fetch, or a click that never reaches your server will not line up with your shortener. Treat platform charts as a second opinion, not the ledger.
Your ledger is a short link you control. One slug per network, per campaign. instagram-june and tiktok-june can share a landing page. They must not share an ID if you want to know which caption earned the click.
Label the click before it lands
Set utm_source to the network, utm_medium to social, and utm_campaign to the name you will say in standup. Put those defaults on the campaign object so a tired teammate does not invent a third spelling of SummerSale. Read device and country next to the label. Together they explain a drop. Alone, either one is a guess.
Put the bio page in the same report
The profile link is a funnel. Caption links are interrupts. If both dump into one anonymous URL, you will over-credit the bio. Keep the page for the profile field. Keep slugs for Stories, pins, and YouTube cards. Compare button taps to caption clicks in one campaign.
